320 God is watching over me

Is he not a victim of the delusion that he can wrest satisfaction and happiness out of this world if he only manages well? (AA p. 61)

While fairly new to the program I was attempting to improve my conscious contact with God through prayer. I always had a difficult time praying and I had a hard time feeling that God was there for me or even aware of me. It was the week before New Year’s Day and I formulated a prayer, in the form of a New Year’s resolution, to stop rolling through stop signs—a sore point with my wife and a factor in my insurance rates.

I subsequently left the house; drove down the hill to a stop sign, drove through it, made a left turn, and almost drove into a parked police car. The officer stepped out and asked me, “Do you always blow through the stop signs?”

I said, “You won’t believe this but I just made a New Year’s resolution to stop doing that.”  He replied, “Well, if you go back around up the hill and drive down properly, I will let you go.” I did, and he did.

Since then, my sponsor has told me, “Don’t you ever doubt that God is keeping an eye on you.”

HP, thank you for watching over me and making Your presence known. I desperately need your love and guidance.
